SUMMARY:NEA Big Read Book Discussion: Interior Chinatown
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the library on Thursday\, April 27 @ 5:30 pm to discuss this year’s NEA Big Read book\, Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu! A humorous and deeply personal novel about race\, pop culture\, immigration\, assimilation\, and escaping the roles we are forced to play. BOOKS AVAILABLE FOR PICKUP WHILE SUPPLIES LAST! \nForever relegated to background roles on TV and in his everyday life\, Willis Wu wakes up to play Generic Asian Man\, leaving his tiny room in a Chinese SRO to go to the Golden Palace restaurant. There\, he plays a background character on a police procedural Black and White\, but he dreams of being Kung Fu Guy\, the most respected role someone who looks like him could play—or so he thinks. After stumbling into the spotlight\, Willis finds himself launched into a wider world than he’s ever known\, discovering not only the secret history of Chinatown\, but the buried legacy of his own family. Infinitely inventive and deeply personal\, this story is an exploration of the themes of pop culture\, assimilation\, and immigration. \nThis is the 2023 NEA Big Read. The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read—a partnership with Arts Midwest—broadens our understanding of our world\, our neighbors\, and ourselves through the power of a shared reading experience. Showcasing a diverse range of themes\, voices\, and perspectives\, the NEA Big Read aims to inspire meaningful conversations\, artistic responses\, and new discoveries and connections in each community.

From years of imprisonment to helping troubled youth battle drug addictions\, from acting to producing\, and now on to restaurant ventures\, Trejo’s name\, face\, and achievements are well recognized in Hollywood and beyond\, but it is his continuous role as a devoted father of three and an intervention counselor that bring him the most satisfaction \nTrejo has starred in dozens of films including Desperado\, Heat\, the From Dusk Til Dawn series\, Con Air\, Once Upon a Time in Mexico\, Spy Kids\, and Machete. On the television side\, he’s had recurring roles on Sons of Anarchy\, King of the Hill\, Breaking Bad\, and The Flash\, among others. SUMMARY:ILP: The Weird and Wonderful World with Mary Roach
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 1st @ 7pm on Zoom!\nRegister for the event here: ILP Event Registration \nExperience an entertaining and hilarious evening with New York Times best-selling science author\, Mary Roach – despite her claim that “people call me a science writer\, though I don’t have a science degree and sometimes have to fake my way through interviews with experts I can’t understand”! Roach will discuss her frank approach to science\, the importance of humor\, and explore the weird\, wonderful world in which we live. \nDubbed “America’s funniest science writer” by the Washington Post\, Roach has explored topics from the curious lives of human cadavers\, packing to visit space\, the afterlife\, the alimentary canal\, and more. Mary Roach is the author of six New York Times bestsellers\, including Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers; Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal\, and Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void. Her newest book Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law\, debuted  September 2021. Mary’s books have been published in 21 languages\, and her second book\, Spook\, was a New York Times Notable Book.  \nMary has written for National Geographic\, Wired\, The New York Times Magazine\, and the Journal of Clinical Anatomy\, among others. She was a guest editor of the Best American Science and Nature Writing series and an Osher Fellow with the San Francisco Exploratorium and serves as an advisor for Orion and Undark magazines. She has been a finalist for the Royal Society’s Winton Prize and a winner of the American Engineering Societies’ Engineering Journalism Award\, in a category for which\, let’s be honest\, she was the sole entrant. \nRoach claims to have no hobbies\, but enjoys bird-watching\, hiking\, playing scrabble\, and watching late-night Animal Planet. \nAnnalee Newitz will join Mary Roach in conversation. Newitz has a Ph.D. in English and American Studies from UC Berkeley and is one half of the hilarious\, Hugo Award-winning podcast\, “Our Opinions are Correct.” On their show\, Newitz delves into the weird\, wonderful\, and nerdy framework of science in pop culture. Previously\, they were the founder of io9\, and served as the editor-in-chief of Gizmodo. \nThey write science fiction and nonfiction. They are the author of Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age and Scatter\, Adapt and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction\, which was a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize in science. They’re also the author of the novels The Terraformers (forthcoming in January 2023)\, The Future of Another Timeline\, and Autonomous\, which won the Lambda Literary Award.  \nAs a journalist\, they are a writer for the New York Times and elsewhere\, and have a monthly column in New Scientist. They have published in The Washington Post\, Slate\, Popular Science\, Ars Technica\, The New Yorker\, and The Atlantic\, among others.  \nThis event is made possible by Illinois Libraries Present\, a statewide collaboration among public libraries offering premier events. ILP is funded in part by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library\, a department of the Office of Secretary of State\, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services\, under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). \nILP is committed to inclusion and accessibility.
